The New Southern Flag

This is a flag I designed for Progressive Southerners to display, wave, and stand for. Despite appearances, not all of us are nostalgic for the argarian days of slavery, vicious racism, and decrepit classism. Some of us actually believe the South means more than a misguided Civil War and an even more misguided Reconstruction. Some of us actually believe that the strength that is the heart of the South lies in our multi-racial, multi-cultural heritage and we feel pride in the triumphs of art, music, and sheer willpower that the best of us have accomplished. This is our flag:

The symbolism should be obvious, of course, with the red, white and blue colors. In addition, the white magnolia represents artistic and intellectual White/European/Caucasian Southern culture; the black star symbolizes the power and triumph of of the intensely creative and proud African American Southern culture; the reverse fields show that you cannot show either symbol without the help of the opposite color; the blue represents both the heart of the Mississippi waters and the ocean that brought all of us immigrants from the Old Worlds (Europe and Africa) here to this beautiful land (the waters that are our natural borders), while the red represents the soil that grew the agrarian South, the blood that has been spilled in the name of equality and justic, and the hopeful heart of a strong republic. Please feel free to lift this image and post it, pass it along, and share it. I would appreciate if you give me credit for designing it, but that isn’t mandantory. If you want a high-resolution copy, that is very easy for me to do. Just email me with the size and resolution and format you need.
